Location

The country of Antigua and Barbuda is one of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, positioned where the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea meet. To the west is St. Kitts and Nevis.

   

Area

The area of Antigua is about 280 km². The area of Barbuda covers about 160 km².

   

Climate

Antigua has a tropical climate, an average pleasant daily temperature of 27°C and annual rainfall of about 1020mm.

   

Population

The current population for the nation is approximately 90,000. The Capital St. John's is the centre of Antigua's tourism and other service industry, and has a population of 30,000.

Eastern Caribbean Dollar. 1 dollar = 2.7 East Caribbean Dollars

 

Education

Antigua and Barbuda has an 11-year compulsory education system with over 30 public elementary schools and 12 public secondary schools. The University of Health Sciences Antiguais listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory. This recognition confers eligibility for the medical graduates of the university to take the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) in the U.S.

 

Religion and Language

English is the official language. The majority of Antiguans are Christians.

 

Economy

Tourism dominates Antigua's economy, while financial services, manufacturing and agriculture also make up an important part of the economy. Antigua is an important offshore financial centre, where major world banks from United States, Canada and Switzerland have offices in Antigua.

    

Political System

Antigua and Barbuda is a constitutional monarchy with a British style parliamentary system of government. The Queen has her representative, an appointed Governor General, representing the Queen as the Head of State. Antigua is a member of the British Commonwealth and Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.

   

Transportation 

Antigua and Barbuda has 384 kilometers of trunk roads and 780 kilometers of subsidiary roads. The Capital St. John‘s has a natural deep harbor with modern facilities and can accommodate 10,000 ton ocean-going passenger and cargo ships. V. C. Bird International Airport is located 9 km northeast of St. John's, the capital of Antigua and Barbuda. It offers international flights to North American and Europe. The flight duration from Antigua to New York City is only 4 hours.

 

Tourism

Tourism is the key driver of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generates around 60% of the island’s income.Nearly 10,000 people are employed in thetourism industry. With some 365 beaches of clean turquoise waters, the lush tropical islands of Antigua and Barbuda are an inviting paradise and considered one of the most beautiful places in the world.

 

Customs

Family and religion play important roles in the lives of Antiguans. Most attend religious services on Sunday.
